Øyvind Mathisen Trio (NO/PL)
This is a Norwegian-Polish jazz trio from Oslo, consisting of Øyvind Frøberg Mathisen on trumpet, Erlend Olderskog Albertsen on double bass, and Patrycja Wybrańczyk on drums.
Øyvind Mathisen is a trumpet player and composer educated in jazz programs in Trondheim and Oslo. With a deep respect for the jazz tradition but also a fondness for experimentation, he has been presenting original jazz music for several years, performing at over 60 concerts, both with his septet ØyvindLAND and the quartet Get Your Goat. Øyvind Mathisen Trio made its concert debut in 2023.
The trio presents a soundscape full of melody and open, atmospheric compositions from all members of the group. The mutual interaction, harmonic freedom, and lightness of improvisation allow the music to evolve in various directions during live performances. Øyvind Mathisen Trio seeks to shift the typical jazz ensemble toward a more classical, contemporary sound, for example by exploring the combination of trumpet and double bass with the use of a bow. Albertsen’s skillful use of the bow enables captivating harmonic explorations, drawing inspiration from, among others, the work of Mark Turner and his innovative harmonic approaches.
Patrycja Wybrańczyk, one of the most fascinating young drummers in Oslo, anchors the trio with her infectious groove and diverse sound palette.
